Since my last post (a year and a half ago?) I've noticed the emergence of a defacto USB power standard. This appears to be a good thing. In my last post I pointed out the lack of a power standard while railing on the lack of a USB jack orientation standard .
The arrival of USB as a standard for 5 Volt power has gone a long way to alleviating the mass of 5 volt wall warts that plagued us in years past. To bad the engineers that specified the standard didn't have the foresight to up the current capacity to at least one ampere, but I'll take 5oo milliamps gladly just the same.
Manufacturers should be applauded when including the smarts in their devices to use the 5 volts supplied by USB jacks. Plugging my Truly Pic-N-Roll MP3 player into any USB jack and holding down the escape key initiates charging. Bravo! Works w/ any computer, regardless of operating systems, with my car stereo's USB port, and w/ a generic 5 volt USB charger my wife purchased for use with her iPod.
Requiring software on the device supplying the 5 volts to facilitate charging should be roundly panned. What's up with this stupid idea Motorola? Plugging my W385 phone into a USB jack should charge the battery. Why does my phone say "not charging" when connected to a generic 5 volt USB device?
